1The Challenge
What was the challenge?
AK Group's leadership team needed a 4-day offsite experience in Kerala that would do more than simply relax the group. With 27 senior leaders gathered at the same property for the first time in two years, the organisation wanted every day to deliver a distinct learning objective — from breaking silos on Day 1 to building cross-functional trust, creative storytelling capability, and strategic thinking by Day 4.
The core challenge was designing a multi-day arc where each activity built on the previous one, and where the progression felt natural rather than forced. Kerala offered the ideal setting: two iconic properties — Nirmaya Hotel and The Leela, Kovalam — provided both the physical space and the atmosphere to support deep, experiential work with a group of this seniority.
2Our Solution
What solution did we design?
The Thought Bulb designed a four-day experiential journey, with each day themed around a distinct leadership lens:
- Day 1 — Connection: Speed Networking to accelerate relationship-building across the 27-person group. In a structured, high-energy format, every participant connected with every other participant — removing the awkward "getting to know you" phase and replacing it with genuine momentum from the first hours of the offsite.
- Day 2 — Problem-Solving Under Pressure: A Crime Scene Investigation challenge that asked teams to gather clues, interrogate evidence, and build a coherent narrative under time pressure — surfacing how teams handle ambiguity, delegate under pressure, and synthesise incomplete information.
- Day 3 — Creative Leadership: The Movie Making Challenge placed participants in the roles of directors, scriptwriters, and actors — demanding creative collaboration, rapid decision-making, and storytelling clarity. The day concluded with a film screening and cultural celebration.
- Day 4 — Strategic Vision: An Augmented Reality Treasure Hunt used digital technology overlaid on the physical Kovalam environment to challenge teams to think like explorers — connecting clues, navigating with precision, and working as a cohesive unit with no single point of leadership dominance.
3How We Did It
How was the programme delivered?
The 4-day programme was delivered across both Nirmaya Hotel and The Leela, Kovalam — with each venue lending a distinct ambiance to its corresponding day's activity.
The Thought Bulb's facilitation team arrived a day early to recce both properties and brief the 27 participants with a custom welcome kit. Each morning began with a brief facilitated check-in to carry forward learning threads from the previous day — ensuring the four experiences formed a coherent journey rather than four standalone events.
All materials, technology (including the AR app for Day 4), costumes for the Movie Making Challenge, and Crime Scene props were transported by The Thought Bulb team and set up without requiring any logistical input from AK Group's HR function. The facilitation team managed the full experience independently, allowing participants to be fully present without operational distraction.
Each day's activity was followed by a 30-minute debrief linking observed team behaviours to AK Group's stated leadership principles — making the experiential learning explicitly relevant to the group's professional context.
4Key Outcomes
What were the results?
AK Group's 27 senior leaders returned from Kerala with measurably stronger cross-functional relationships, evidenced by post-offsite survey results showing a significant increase in reported comfort reaching out to colleagues outside their direct teams.
- 4 days, 4 distinct learning arcs — each activity delivered a unique leadership insight that compounded across the programme.
- 100% participant engagement — the structured variety of the 4-day arc prevented the fatigue that often affects multi-day offsites with repetitive formats.
- Speed Networking outcomes: Leaders reported that connections built on Day 1 directly enabled more effective collaboration in the subsequent three days' activities.
- AR Treasure Hunt: The Day 4 challenge was rated highest by participants — technological novelty combined with physical exploration of the Kovalam coastline created a memorable shared experience that became the group's defining offsite moment.
- Venue integration: Using both Nirmaya and The Leela created a natural sense of exploration and prevented the routine that settles into longer offsites when participants spend every day in identical surroundings.
